September 2005 General Meeting Notes
Our annual September auction was a great success for those seeking new material to work on and for the club’s treasury. Many thanks especially to John Boyce for his auctioneering acumen and to all members and friends who donated items for the benefit of our club.
This past month also saw the completion of this year’s part two of the Bonsai Basics Class.
Not everyone who attended the first class came to the follow up repotting class. If you are out there and still interested bring your juniper from the first class to our October General Meeting and I will supply you with the pot and an additional tree as well as individual instruction.
The club will be conducting a fall repotting workshop at the October Meeting, second Thursday. Bring your fruiting or flowering trees, junipers or natives in dormancy to repot.
The club will be providing soil for those needing it and instruction in repotting methods.
There will also be pots for sale.
October will also be the month we elect new officers and board members for the next year.
If you would like to participate in planning for our club activities being elected to the board is the best way to help direct the club going forward. Let any of the existing board members know of your desire to serve or just volunteer your name at the October meeting. All who want to contribute are welcome.
Going forward our last working program for the year will be the Marco Invenizzi two part workshop on November 10. The first starting at noon to 4 in our regular meeting room and then a second workshop from 6 to 10. The workshop is $25 per session. The classes are limited to ten participants each. Enrollment is on a first paid and registered basis. You can register for just one or both workshops. Call or e-mail me and send your check with the hours and program specified to Daryl Quijano, club treasurer. Those members not paying for the session are invited to observe the workshop at any time during the day.
Marco is a bonsai artist based in Italy who apprenticed with Japanese Master Kimura for five years. He brings insight and vision to all material and is especially trained for working with older trees with dead wood.
If you want to learn more about repotting and bonsai in general The Collection North Garden would be the place to be the last week in October and early November. Kathy Shaner, the garden?s curator will be working during that time with assistants to prepare the trees in the garden for the coming winter. Head on over and observe and volunteer some of your time to help maintain this local treasure. In the process you are sure to learn something about bonsai maintenance and the dedicated community members who are helping to grow this amazing resource.
