by Lawrence LeClairePreparing Bonsai Soil
Feb 2nd: It is repotting season and for the past few years, you may have acquired your bonsai soil from vendors, the kindness of others, or from the club stash. But now you may have more trees than ever and handouts of those bags of premixed soil are getting more expensive and you’re feeling guilty about hitting up your bud for 10 gallons of soil. Is now the time to attempt your own mix? Sure! It’s actually quite easy, but some planning is necessary...  read more »

Apr 30th: I've had this little oak for about three or four years...can't remember exactly. It's an island scrub oak, native only to the Catalina Islands of California. I bought it from an arboretum sale in a gallon can. I made one courage chop to remove all of the existing foliage which was above the present height of the tree; it budded out all over the trunk and has been growing well for the last few years...  read more »

by Eric SchraderThe Secret to Great Bonsai - Repotting.
Feb 8th: For our February 2007 meeting the club came together for a night of repotting and root work. Special thanks to John Edwards for taking charge of our newer members. Repotting can be a mystifying process for people who have no knowledge of the proper way to do it. John provided help and instruction to more than a half dozen people, all of whom I'm sure were very grateful. As I mentioned in the article about this program, repotting is a fine art in many ways...  read more »

Feb 9th: February 2006 Meeting Notes It was with his usual flare that Tim Kong started off our February program by introducing us to a little-known but fantastic bonsai potter named Sue R. Pipe. He explained that this potter worked over a hundred years ago and made some fantastic pots that are just waiting to be dug up from under all our houses, (and that they have a fantastic 'patina.') After this introduction Tim went on to say that the title of his program was 'Getting off the pot...  read more »
by Eric SchraderLooking back over the year, welcoming in the new club president
Nov 21st: From The President December 2005 It is again the season to examine your bonsai collection to evaluate what you have accomplished in the past year or two. For me, the past two years have been a time of tremendous growth in my trees and in my love of bonsai. While I have been working as president my trees have benefited from my dedication to the art. I have bought many trees and my yard has become ever more filled as I started 40 pines and 40 oaks from seeds...  read more »
by John EdwardsOctober General Meeting notes
Oct 26th: At our October general meeting Tim Kong and Steve Jang led a repotting workshop. The club provided ample amounts of Tim's general repotting medium. Tim and Steve spoke to the basics of adding screen and tie down wire to your pots as well as choosing the right pot for a particular tree. Junipers and flowering trees are okay to repot this time of year and quite a few members took advantage of the evening and the cumulative experience on hand...  read more »
