by Lawrence LeClaireFebruary 2008 General Meeting - Branch Enhancement - Grafting Junipers with Jim Gremel
Feb 14th: Jim Gremel was our guest for the February General Meeting to demonstrate how to graft shimpaku foliage onto juniper stock. Jim is known all around the Bay Area and California as an expert grafter and for his superb trees. It was our great pleasure to have Jim as a guest and make the long drive down from Occidental on a rainy Thursday night.
Of the many useful techniques to enhance trees trained for bonsai, grafting is one of the more powerful techniques, allowing addition of new roots, branches, and foliage to a tree... read more »

by Eric SchraderThe Bennett Juniper
Jul 24th: I had the chance to visit the Bennett Juniper, the largest western juniper currently living. The tree is located in the Stanislaus National Forest, approximately 12 miles on back roads from highway 108, east of Sonora, CA. The Forest Service has a handout which provides many details which I will reproduce here:
Background
The Bennett Juniper (Juniperus Occidentalis) is named after Clarence Bennett, a naturalist who devoted himself to the study of this specific species... read more »

by Eric SchraderKathy Shaner and Yasuo Mitsuya! Transform a Juniper
May 10th: We had one of our best crowds ever for the May general meeting when, despite two flat tires, a juniper and a couple of bonsai masters managed to get together and accomplish some great work. Kathy Shaner and Yasuo Mitsuya were on hand and well equipped to take a juniper that was long overdue for a restyling to the next level. The San Jose Juniper was all "poodle-y" looking when it arrived, but by the time it left it had been transformed into a tree that will fill in and be a great bonsai in a very short time... read more »

by Eric SchraderGary Tom on Juniper and Bonsai over the years
May 11th: May 2006 General Meeting
For the third leg in our trinity of Juniper programs Gary Tom treated attending members of the May general meeting to a discussion of his thirty years of experience in growing junipers in San Francisco. Gary is a long-time club member and has dedicated much of his yard to the developement of Juniper bonsai from nursery stock.
Gary's talk centered on his experiences through the years: At age thirteen he started by reading the venerable and ever-useful Sunset garden books "Bonsai... read more »

by Eric SchraderThe Iron Bonsai Challenge
Apr 13th: April General Meeting Notes
Tim Kong was the chairman for an evening of Juniper styling at our April General Meeting, the Iron Bonsai Challenge. Five teams of trained-professional bonsai artist transformed some old gnarled bushes into some old gnarled bonsai. This un-biased reporter happened to be in on the action and can say with authority that the results of my team's efforts were by far the superior bonsai... read more »

by Eric SchraderJim Gremel Whips Some Junipers Into Shape
Mar 9th: March 2006 Program Notes
For our March general meeting Jim Gremel was on hand to conduct a workshop on small Juniper stock. Jim, who is well known for taking pliable young material and bending it all around into interesting shapes, brought along examples, large and small, of what he has done in ten years of training in the "yamadori style". Jim's technique involves putting copper wire of an appropriate size onto the long whips of shimpaku (juniper) and bending it into coils or snakes or any other twisted shape that comes to mind... read more »
