Mar 27th: Last February I visited the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and viewed their bonsai display. The trees I found there were a mixture of old, high quality trees and obviously new additions. This wasn't a show they had on, and it was the dead of winter, but rather a display of trees that I would guess rotate in and out throughout the year. I'll add titles/captions to these photos when I have time. Meanwhile, take a look at what was on display...  read more »

May 7th: Each year (or so) I take photos of all my trees. It’s easy to loose track of how much things change. Looking at a tree I’ve had for years I can’t really imagine it looking like much of anything else. When I pull up a photo of it 3 years ago it’s quickly aparent how much it has changed. It’s satisfying to see the fruits of my labor spelled out so clearly. It’s not really my intention that anyone browse through all these photos - they are more for my own use; a documentation of where I was with each tree as of a certain date...  read more »

Valley Oak
Mar 22nd: For the past several years I've photographed all the trees in our shows and every year, as I compose each shot, I get this deja vu because, well, I have done this before. I look through the viewfinder at the tree I'm about to photograph and see an image that I've seen before, but it's slightly different. Something has changed; sometimes it's slight, and sometimes it's dramatic. Looking through this year's gallery I saw many trees that have been shown repeatedly over the years and going back and finding those trees again illustrates how much they change...  read more »

BSSF Logo Tree
Mar 19th: This year's show lived up to the expectations that we've all come to have of this annual event. The quality of the trees and the crowd were all great. Thanks to all the members of our club who pitched in at the demo stage, the sales table, the information table, and on the show floor. There are over 150 photos in the gallery here on the web site. Every tree in the show should be included and labeled...  read more »

The main grounds...
Mar 5th: Yesterday I went with several other members of our club to collect in Marin in a graveyard of all places. The grounds were vast and the material included olives, plums, oaks, redwoods, boxwoods, junipers, and numerous other species. Tim Kong lead the charge and even brought a lunch for everyone (thanks Tim!).This graveyard (I can't recall the name now) was over 150 years old and many of the gravestones that I passed were from the mid-1800s...  read more »
by Aaron N.Got a few chores done today…
Feb 13th: Today I did what I should have done in the fall (like Eric did back in the fall): I cleaned all my benches. I removed all the dead leaves and muck that collects under my pots (I need to filter my soil better, too). I scrubbed everything down with water with a little bit of bleach in it. I trimmed back nearby plants that were shading my shelves, rearranged my trees a bit and rotated those that were growing already...  read more »
