Apr 26th: April 2007 started off with the first BSSF sale at the County Fair Building since 1996. And a successful sale it was. “A typical day at the Cow Palace” according to Tim Kong. In just half the time and with certainly fewer buyers the club managed to make a healthy profit after expenses. Checks to individual members for your respective sales should be sent out soon. April also saw eight new members taking the Bonsai Fundamentals class with many returning for a full house third Thursday workshop...  read more »

Jul 26th: With six to eight weeks more of growing time left in the summer I’m continuing to watch my trees grow. Regular feedings, pinching new growth where apropriate and given the current cycle of warm weather attempting another round of defoliation on maples and elms (probably the last for this year). My junipers continue to fill out and need some thinning as well as a redwood that has just exploded with growth...  read more »

Jun 27th: Summer is officially begun on the calendar and in the daily cycle of sun and fog and cool temperatures for those of us on the western side of the bay. Though it may be gray overhead our trees continue to grow and their needs for water, fertilizer and trimming continue at an accelerated pace. Now is not the time to slack off. Check your pots daily for watering needs and if you have not already committed to a regular program of feeding sit down with a calendar and mark at alternating weekends to feed all your trees through mid September...  read more »

May 23rd: The spring weather is giving way to our summer pattern and depending where you live that could mean anything from hotter and dryer to cooler, overcast and windy. It is a good time to take a careful look at your trees and see how they are adjusting to the changing season in your particular place. Don’t take anything for granted. Watering for example. It is not so simple as it sounds and different trees will have different needs...  read more »

Apr 26th: Everyone wants to know what is the way to having beautiful bonsai trees. And I would answer that you must know the trees you grow, their needs and characteristics, how and when to prune and shape them, when to water and spray for pests, when and how to root prune and repot, how to select an appropriate pot to put them in and how to cultivate and maintain them to keep their size and beauty. Additionally you must study other trees both in nature and the work of others on bonsai material...  read more »

Mar 21st: The 2006 show is concluded and will be remembered as a testament to the dedication, cooperation and creativity of our membership. Over one hundred trees were on display. Many thanks go out to all those who helped plan and assemble one of our strongest shows in memory. It is important to note that this show does not simply happen. It takes the efforts of many members and many months of planning to make it happen...  read more »

Mar 5th: With just a bit more than two weeks to go before our annual show it is imperative that all members check their calendars for the dates of March 15 through March 19. Be prepared to volunteer and participate in, what is, our club's largest endeavor of the year. Contact Ron Weaver or speak with him on March 9 at our next General Meeting and commit to at least one shift during the run of our exhibit. If you are not on Ron’s schedule you will have to pay full admission price to attend the exhibit...  read more »

Jan 22nd: This year is off to a busy start. Our January General Meeting was very well attended with many members, from long time to first time, showing up to take in an excellent presentation by John Boyce. Using a small Hollywood juniper to demonstrate the creation of a bunjin style tree John managed to pack an incredible amount of information touching on all the important aspects of bonsai creation from styling and wiring to special techniques of repotting...  read more »
by Eric SchraderLooking back over the year, welcoming in the new club president
Nov 21st: From The President December 2005 It is again the season to examine your bonsai collection to evaluate what you have accomplished in the past year or two. For me, the past two years have been a time of tremendous growth in my trees and in my love of bonsai. While I have been working as president my trees have benefited from my dedication to the art. I have bought many trees and my yard has become ever more filled as I started 40 pines and 40 oaks from seeds...  read more »
