Liquid Amber
Mar 5th: With just a bit more than two weeks to go before our annual show it is imperative that all members check their calendars for the dates of March 15 through March 19. Be prepared to volunteer and participate in, what is, our club's largest endeavor of the year. Contact Ron Weaver or speak with him on March 9 at our next General Meeting and commit to at least one shift during the run of our exhibit. If you are not on Ron’s schedule you will have to pay full admission price to attend the exhibit...  read more »
by John EdwardsOn the Jan. Meeting & the workshop attendance
Jan 22nd: This year is off to a busy start. Our January General Meeting was very well attended with many members, from long time to first time, showing up to take in an excellent presentation by John Boyce. Using a small Hollywood juniper to demonstrate the creation of a bunjin style tree John managed to pack an incredible amount of information touching on all the important aspects of bonsai creation from styling and wiring to special techniques of repotting...  read more »
by John EdwardsLetter from the Asian Museum
Dec 12th: I want to thank all of your members for participating in a fantastic exhibition of your bonsai, and for being such wonderful educators. Your presence in the festive happi coats brought the museum to life and the trees delighted everyone who saw them. It is rare that I personally spend that much time with a presentation, but it was so fascinating and all new to me. I enjoyed talking with several of your members, including yourself...  read more »

San Jose Juniper
Nov 21st: On November tenth the club held it's second series of workshops with Marco Invenizzi. The two four-hour workshops beginning at noon attracted several members who brought in trees to work on with Marco for a fee. Additionally other members arrived during the day to observe and learn. Oct 26th: At our October general meeting Tim Kong and Steve Jang led a repotting workshop. The club provided ample amounts of Tim's general repotting medium. Tim and Steve spoke to the basics of adding screen and tie down wire to your pots as well as choosing the right pot for a particular tree. Junipers and flowering trees are okay to repot this time of year and quite a few members took advantage of the evening and the cumulative experience on hand...  read more »

Oct 13th: September 2005  General Meeting Notes Our annual September auction was a great success for those seeking new material to work on and for the club's treasury. Many thanks especially to John Boyce for his auctioneering acumen and to all members and friends who donated items for the benefit of our club. This past month also saw the completion of this year's part two of the Bonsai Basics Class. Not everyone who attended the first class came to the follow up repotting class...  read more »
by John EdwardsAugust 2005 General Meeting
Aug 23rd: At our August meeting Jay McDonald presented a program on training field grown flowering trees as bonsai. Two flowering plums and a deciduous pomegranate were the subjects of the demonstration. Jay emphasized strongly that these trees are grown for their profuse spring bloom and that the challenge is to develop an attractive tree preferably with and old appearance to serve as a scaffold for this delightful annual springtime event...  read more »
by John EdwardsNotes from June meeting
Jun 23rd: Our June program was about working on smaller sized trees or ?shohin? as it is commonly referred to. Technically speaking that would be a bonsai with a height of eight inches or less from soil surface to apex, in a pot with a maximum length of ten inches. Lonnie McCormick, who is a member of the local shohin group, brought along three starter trees and a wealth of experience to share with our group...  read more »

May 27th: May 2005 General Meeting notes Redwood, sequoia sempervirons, native to northern California was initially shunned by the local bonsai enthusiasts according to BSSF?s own Tim Kong. Fast growing and course it did not seem to have the qualities one looks for in bonsai material. The challenge then was irresistible for Tim, arguably the bay area guru of redwood bonsai cultivation. For his program Tim brought along Steve Jang and Eric Schrader and a large assortment of redwood trees in various styles to illustrate the evening...  read more »
by John EdwardsApril Program Notes
Apr 28th: At our April Meeting John Boyce addressed those gathered with a discourse and demonstration on what bonsai is to him. With over 40 years as an active BSSF club member and in practicing bonsai he has much to share. And he did generously. To those especially starting in bonsai and to those who find it vexing he advises, ?Start at the beginning with a young tree, which has some potential, and make it your own...  read more »
