Apr 26th: April 2007 started off with the first BSSF sale at the County Fair Building since 1996. And a successful sale it was. “A typical day at the Cow Palace” according to Tim Kong. In just half the time and with certainly fewer buyers the club managed to make a healthy profit after expenses. Checks to individual members for your respective sales should be sent out soon. April also saw eight new members taking the Bonsai Fundamentals class with many returning for a full house third Thursday workshop...  read more »

Mar 29th: Our annual SF Garden Show display has come and gone. While the display itself was masterfully assembled by Eric Schrader and the quality of trees, stands and accents was impressive with many members participating, the experience this year left many wanting more. I think it is time for the Bonsai Society of San Francisco to return to its home in the County Fair Building with a larger annual exhibit that allows all members to participate fully...  read more »

Feb 23rd: March madness. Busy Time for bonsai people. Keeping up with repotting trees, more budding out each day. Working on potential show trees to be ready for our annual display at the San Francisco Garden Show. This all adds up to a lot of time when dropped into our already busy city lives. But you must take the time to make sure the tree you repot is in a pot that shows it to it’s best advantage and enhances the composition you have given the tree...  read more »

by John EdwardsCollection North urgent need for docent volunteers
Feb 3rd: We really need more help from Bay Area bonsai club members to keep the GSBF Garden open. People are needed for all the duties there, of course, but I'm most concerned about the docent situation. Last month Hollis and I worked as docents one Saturday afternoon and the last three Sundays because no one else signed up. And we will fill the shift tomorrow afternoon also. So please make an impassioned plea to your club members for February and March...  read more »

Our set up day will be Tuesday March 20. We will have a floor plan at the February 8 general meeting and we will be doing a mock up of the show set up at our March 8 meeting. Each BSSF member is encouraged to participate. Though the size of the show will be a reduction from past years there will be enough space for each member to show one tree...  read more »

Dec 28th: Winter solstice has passed and the days are now slowly getting longer. Soon buds will begin swelling as San Francisco’s early spring makes a short season of winter. Time to get ready for repotting. Maples are usually first to start moving. Watch your trees for signs of swelling as the signal to repot. Make sure you have soil ready and select pots that better show off your trees. The current issue of Bonsai Today, #106, has a very good article by Marco Invernizzi about repotting and styling a mature yew tree with some helpful observations about root conditions and how to proceed depending on the tree’s root’s health...  read more »

Nov 29th: A cold rain and cooler temperatures have finally ushered in our dormant season. Now you can get your late fall early winter bonsai chores underway. By now deciduous trees should be bare. Now is the time to study the bare structure and make the big cuts and styling changes before the sap starts running again. Yellowing leaves should be removed by cutting at the base of the leaf leaving some petiole as insurance against an early leaf out...  read more »
