by Eric SchraderDo what Jim said…
Apr 19th: If there is one thing that stuck in my mind from the Yamadori-style juniper workshop that Jim Gremel provided for our April general meeting it's this quote: "one experiment is worth a thousand opinions."  Of course this is nothing new to many people; you can poll all the bonsai experts in the world and get little consensus on what the best way is to grow a bonsai, fertilize, collect, or water for that matter...  read more »

by Eric SchraderJanuary 2009 General Meeting – Japanese Black Pine Overview
Jan 8th: To kick off the Bonsai New Year, our own Eric Schrader gave a talk and demonstration on the “granddaddy of bonsai”, Japanese black pine.   Black pine is native to Korea, Japan and China and is widely considered the finest pine for bonsai as well as the "King of bonsai" (whatever that means...) Black pine care can seem complicated to the beginner and does take some time to understand, however once the basic concepts are in place the results that you will see from your black pines are fantastic...  read more »
by Eric SchraderShow Prep in Preparation for the Spring Show
Nov 18th: In preparation for our spring show I would like to remind everyone about show prep for your trees.  Speaking as the show-chair for BSSF I would just like to remind everyone that March is not as far away as you might think.  Now is the time to be doing critical clean up and wiring of trees that you plan to put in the spring show. Show prep is a little bit maintenance and a little bit of putting off maintenance...  read more »
by Eric SchraderStart thinking Silhouette
Nov 1st: In bonsai there are so many things to worry about; horticulture: is my tree growing well or is it languishing in old soil;  Aesthetics: how can I make the next step to improve my tree?  In fact there are so many things that one can be concerned about that sometimes it seems that you just have to give up on perfection so that you can achieve greatness.  I think that one of the things that novices and seasoned pros can tend to forget, or never realize in the first place, is the relative importance of different aspects of bonsai design...  read more »
