Pots, Stands and accent plants
The pots we show our trees in are expected to receive proper attention to assure that they compliment the tree and show the same care and attention that we put into making the tree ready for show. Pots which sit outside all year get splashed with rain, water and dust. The outside of the pots can build up a white lime coating from leached minerals in our water. There are several ways to look at the task ahead. It is generally considered good form to clean the dirt and debris off of pots and stands and to oil them to give a finished look. Pots can be cleaned with a soft rag and vinegar (on the outside only) or rubbing alcohol to take off difficult stains. However, there is another way of looking at these deposits on your pot. Bonsai is supposed to represent great age.
When appropriate to your tree the pot can also show age. Antique pots are highly prized for showing old trees in, where a clean new pot would not be as complimentary. If your pot has these lime deposits which are
a distracting white color you can darken them with sumi-e ink. The sumi-e is absorbed by the lime and gives the pot a darker older appearance. India ink is not recommended for this. The sumi-e can be applied evenly with a soft rag; allow to dry and re-coat until the pot has an aged patina. The pot can then be wiped with a thin coat of vegetable oil and buffed dry just before the show.
Stands should be cleaned and polished. Apply a scratch remover where needed. Never drag a pot across a wooden stand always lift up the pot and set it down. Never carry a stand with a pot on it they should be moved separately and safely.
Accent plants
Clean out dead and dying vegetation, our show should be representative of the season, which is spring. Accents with fresh new foliage, emerging buds and new growth are most desirable. Think spring. Remove debris, unsightly mosses and liverworts. Apply appropriately sized top dressing. Make sure accent material, its movement and the stand is complimentary to main tree.
