The annual BSSF fund raiser auction this year was an unqualified success. There was a generous amount of very good material put on the block and our members and guests responded equally generously. Also generous was the buffet anchored amply by Ema and Tim Kong and Phyllis Rizzi with notable donations from various members and friends. John Boyce kept the evening moving along while still peppering his comments with valuable suggestions about the potential of various materials to be sold. Thanks go out to all who contributed and participated. The funds raised that night will help pay for our future programs.
Speaking of future programs our October 2006 schedule is being reversed to accommodate a full day workshop program with Marco Invenizzi on Oct. 19. The program is a paid workshop with Marco. Those members not participating are invited to attend as observers and this will constitute our General Meeting for the month. If you want to sign up for the Marco workshop there are instructions in the newsletter and web site. The date for our third Thursday free workshop for members is rescheduled for October 12, second Thursday.
At our November meeting we traditionally hold elections for the BSSF board of directors. The board is responsible for planning club activities and programs for the coming year. We try to take into account the interests and abilities of all the membership in this planning as well as the opportunities and costs which are presented. Our board meetings are affable, uncomplicated and ultimately rewarding to the club and its members.
There are four officers on the board; President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer plus allowance for an unspecified number of at large board members. The club charter specifies that The President and Vice-President and at large board members can serve two consecutive one year terms renewable after the first year. Secretary and Treasurer can serve indefinitely until they resign. This year marks the first year terms for the current president and vice president. Our current treasurer has served generously with distinction for over six years.
The charter also specifies that board members make every effort to attend all board meetings and that they forfeit their seats if they can not attend several consecutive meetings in a year. Currently the board has been stretched thin by the busy schedules of several at large members who have not been able to attend on a regular enough basis to help carry the load. Our current Secretary particularly has had many conflicts, not least of which is keeping our web site up and running, which have kept him from meetings. I urge any member who can spare the time and your input on the future direction of BSSF to consider putting your hat in the ring for a board seat or the position of Secretary. The Secretary is responsible for taking minutes at the board meetings. Those minutes are to be made available to the board and all members and are an essential function that can not be overlooked. If anyone in the club has the time once a month (fourth Mondays each month except December) and could help us out please contact me directly and I will add your name to the elections slate for November.
