First, I want to welcome all of our new members to the Bonsai Society of San Francisco, I hope you find our club as inviting as I did several years ago. Many of our most talented members found our club just as you after viewing our exhibit at the Cow Palace. Now, because of the guidance of our excellent teachers and members, their trees are displayed proudly as the best bonsai our club has to offer. With patience and persistence you will find this hobby both satisfying and peaceful (and maybe addictive). Whatever enjoyment you get from maintaing your trees, we are glad you decided to do it with us.
Next, I would like to extend a great deal of thanks to John Edwards, Eric Schrader, and Andrea Burhoe for their work with the Cherry Blossom Festival bonsai display. Organizing and setting up a bonsai display is no easy task. Volunteers must be corralled and trees must be prepared. Without our volunteers, the displays would cease to exist. If you visited the bonsai display in Japan Town, please express your thanks personally to John , Eric, and Andrea.
Lastly, to all our members, April started the growing season for our trees. To maximize the small amount of heat and sunlight we hope to receive this growing season, it is imperative that you feed your trees regularly. No matter your technique of refinement, without proper nourishment, your trees will not be strong and will not progress to mature bonsai. Determine the correct feeding regiment for your species of tree by speaking to our more experienced members. Then, choose your tree food, and stick to it! Think of the growing season as a marathon. Be persistent! Don’t slack off! Push through to the finish line. I promise you will see the results this Fall and again in the Spring when your trees leap in to the next growing season.
