April 2007 started off with the first BSSF sale at the County Fair Building since 1996. And a successful sale it was. “A typical day at the Cow Palace” according to Tim Kong. In just half the time and with certainly fewer buyers the club managed to make a healthy profit after expenses. Checks to individual members for your respective sales should be sent out soon.
April also saw eight new members taking the Bonsai Fundamentals class with many returning for a full house third Thursday workshop. Many thanks to Tim, Eric, Aaron and Lawrence for providing guidance to the many new and enthusiastic members, as well as seasoned members retuning to the workshop. And welcome all to BSSF.
Excitement is building for the May demo with Japanese bonsai expert Mr. Mitsuya, and his locally famous student Kathy Shaner. They will work on an old juniper purchased by the club that will be raffled off at the conclusion of the program. Members are always encouraged to donate additional items to the raffle.
Board member John Pennington is working on the roster of club members and their respective contact info. You must be current with your dues to be included. Please check with John if your info has changed.
Board member Joe Nersveen is checking to secure a date this summer for a BSSF club car pool trip to Lone Pine and Miniature Plant Kingdom nurseries in Sonoma County. Seasoned members will guide newer members in their purchases. And this gives us a chance to get out of the city and enjoy a picnic lunch a beautiful setting.
Our club Librarian, Paul Hrisko, who has put much time and effort into organizing out book collection, will be leaving the country for several months. We will be asking for a volunteer at the May meeting to step in and keep track of the club’s Library. Preferred is someone who plans to attend most of the second and third Thursdays so that the books can be made available to our members on our meeting nights. Please speak to me if you can do this for at least the next four months. Paul is also looking for people who can keep some of his trees while he is away. He has several trees he is willing to donate to BSSF club members who can provide
care. He would also appreciate any members who could board a few trees he would like to get back when he returns. He will be out of country in June and intermittently here in May. You can contact Paul at 415-861-5244.
