Greetings everyone!
First of all, my apologies for spotty newsletter/website coverage the past few months. There’s a good excuse. At the end of December, I’ll be leaving San Francisco and headed back to the Southeast. I recently accepted a position as a new professor in the College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL. All my time the past few months and the few remaining has and will be spent cataloging data and finishing up experiments at UCSF. Writing and publishing the BSSF newsletter has taken a backseat and without any new volunteers, has been a chore.
What does that mean for you? If you have been sitting on the sidelines enjoying BSSF programs, workshops, and activities, it’s time to step up and help out. My departing will leave an open officer position, a Board member position, the newsletter editor/reporter, and the website guy position open. These positions must be filled by new blood to keep the club active and the current set of officers and Board members from being overwhelmed. Don’t be shy! Do not think that you do not have the experience. This is a volunteer-based club and it does not function without your help. Please take some time to think about it, and come forward the next few months to participate.
If you are interested, come to a Board meeting on the 4th Monday of the month at the County Fair Building to see how BSSF business is conducted.
Our annual elections are held each year at the November General meeting. If you are interested in serving the club, please speak to Diana Lum at an upcoming meeting.
The remaining 2010 monthly programs have been scheduled. You can find a list of them on the website. In August, Tim Kong will be presenting his Bonsai carving demonstration and talk.
In September, we will have our annual auction. Our auction is an important part of our fundraising activities. Items for the auction are all donated to the club. No consignments. This means all of our members must contribute bonsai trees, material, supplies, wine, etc to make the event successful. Please reach deep into your collection and make a donation to the club. Also, come to the auction prepared to bid. Each year we have a great selection of items and many people have left the evening with excellent deals. This is your chance to acquire some great material at great prices.
Thanks! Lawrence
